EDIT гривня The hryvnia (hryvnya; Ukrainian: гривня; IPA: [hrĭv\'njä]) has been the national currency of Ukraine since September 2, 1996.

The specific design of the hryvnia sign is a result of a public contest held by National Bank of Ukraine in 2003. It is based on the letterform for an italic Cyrillic г (г) with two horizontal strokes which ostensibly symbolize “stability”.

The Ukrainian hryvnia can be represented with its ISO 4217 code UAH, or by the abbreviation грн. In addition to this, Nacional´nyj bank Ukraïny introduced on 2004-03-01 a dedicated symbol to identify the currency.
