History The sign was created in 1974 by Arthur Eisenmenger. At that time, Eisenmenger was head graphic designer of the European Union and created the sign for a promotional campaign. The character is a mirrored image of the glagolithic sign »Jest«.
20 years later, Eisenmenger already approaching retirement, it was remembered and put to use in a much more comprehensive scheme. In 1997, it was officially established by the European Commission as the sign for the European currency. The Euro is official currency of many European countries since January 1st 2002. The sign bears a certain formal resemblance to other currency signs such as Dollar, Pound or Yen. |
