EDIT Japanese Industrial Norm The origin of the Unicode is connected to the JIS, the Japanese Industrial Standards Committee.
In 1986, employees of Xerox began to compare similar characters of the already existing extensive sets of encoded characters in Japanese (JIS) and Chinese (simplified and traditional). This led to a first discussion on how the two related writing systems could be united in one computer. This »Han Unification« is the beginning of the Unicode.
