EDIT Peace Symbol This is probably not the only symbol for peace but the most important and most widely used one.

It has its origin in the British »Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament« of the 1950th. It was created on February 21st 1958 by the British artist Gerald Holtom who was commissioned by the CND to create a symbol for a protest march against a nuclear arms research center.

The sign is a combination of the letters »N« (nuclear) and »D« (disarmament) of the International Flag Alphabet (semaphore).

It was then used by staff members of Martin Luther King during the civil-rights movement and as a symbol of resistance against the Vietnam war and made its way around the world as the Peace Symbol.
