EDIT The Franc is the former currency of France, in use till 2002. It was divided into Centimes; 100 centimes added up to one Franc. The currency symbol is ₣. Common abbreviations are FF or, with ISO 4217, FRF.

EDIT History
The Franc was the successor to the Livre in 1795. It was the first purely decimal currency in Europe and used a very simple system for coinage. A silver Franc weighed exactly 5 grams, goldcoins were worth 15,5 times the worth of silver coins.
The system was soon adopted by other countries which led to the Latin Monetary Union in 1865. The Latin Monetary Union was an agreement between several european countries about coinage and acceptance of each others coins as means of payment, not unlike the Euro is used today.
In many former colonies of France the currency is still called Franc.

1958 the »Nouveu Franc« was introduced and was worth 100 old Francs (Ancien Francs). The »Nouveau« was dropped officially in 1960.
With the introduction of the Euro in 2002 the Franc went out of use.

EDIT Glyph variants Often, the French Franc Character is represented as a Latin Capital F with a bar.
