EDIT Incorrect The english name of this Unicode character is wrong. It has nothing to do with the official Euro-sign but was instead created much earlier, in the seventies or eighties, when the concept of a common European currency, called the ECU, was first discussed.

The Euro currency sign of today can be found at € U+20AC EURO SIGN.

Usage
This character saw hardly any use at all and was never official since the first common European currency never made it past its planning stage.

Character shape
The idea of a common currency and the name Ecu were strongly supported by the French, so it could be an abbreviation for Communauté Européenne (European Union).
