EDIT Kashida The Arabic Tatweel is a kashida. A kashida is a typographic element that is needed to justify lines of text. It gets attached to characters at certain points to stretch them. Since the Arabic Script is written with connected characters this extension dissappears within the line of text.
The Arabic Tatweel is also used with Syriac script.
