EDIT
History Many teletypes contained a small wheel with sixteen rows of eight tabs each. By breaking off selected tabs, a sequence of up to sixteen ascii characters could be specified. When the teletpye received a an ENQ, the device was triggered, causing the characters to be sent as though typed by the operator.
