EDIT History Many teletypes contained a small wheel with sixteen rows of eight tabs each. By breaking off selected tabs, a sequence of up to sixteen ascii characters could be specified. When the teletpye received a an ENQ, the device was triggered, causing the characters to be sent as though typed by the operator.

EDIT Modern Usage Answerback On terminals and terminal emulators, receipt of an ENQ character generally causes a string of printable characters followed by a newline to be sent. This string may identify the type of terminal or terminal emulation.
