Tagalog is a central Philipine language and belongs to the Austronesian language family. It is related to the Indonesian, Fijian, Maori, Hawaiian, Malagasy, Samoan, Tahitian, Chamorro, tetum and the Austronesian languages of Taiwa.

Other languages have influenced Tagalog, such as Spanish, Fukien Chinese, English, Malay, Sanskrit, Arabic (via Malay/Spanish), and Northern Philippine languages like Kapampangan (spoken on the island of Luzon).

EDIT Oldest document The first book written in Tagalog is from 1593, the Doctrina Cristiana. It was written in three different versions, one Spanish, one in the language Tagalog and with the Latin alphabet, and one in Baybayin (a pre-Hispanic Tagalog writing system).
