EDIT Superscripts and Subscripts
Superscripts are numbers or letters of a smaller size set above the normal line of type.
Subscripts are also smaller in size and set at or below the baseline.
In a thoroughly designed font, typeface designers provide these characters with individual shapes since numbers simply reduced in size will not display the same grey values as the basic fonts will.
