EDIT Cuneiform is a Sumerian logographic script characterized by the wedge-shaped indentations people made on clay tablets with the help of a stylus which, in most cases, consisted of a sharpened reed with which horizontal, vertical and diagonal impressions were made into the clay.
Cuneiform was the script of choice of many civilised peoples of the ancient Middle East (mainly in Babylon and Assyria) over the period from about 3000 to 400 BC.

The Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative (CDLI), a joint project of the University of California at Los Angeles and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, represents the efforts of an international group of Assyriologists, museum curators and historians of science to make availiable through the internet the form and content of cuneiform tablets dating from the beginning of writing, ca. 3350 BC, until the end of the pre-Christian era. The CDLI estimates the number of these documents currently kept in public and private collections to exeed 500,000 exemplares, of which now more than 200,000 have been catalogued in electronic form by the CDLI.
